Karangwa Hirwa Julien

Founder & CTO at Buildasoft Ltd

"In every line of code I write, I see a chance to make someone's life a little better. Technology isn't just about solving problems; it's about creating opportunities for connection, growth, and hope."

Julien's tech journey began when he was eight years old, driven by an insatiable curiosity for computers in a place where most people his age didn't have one. Despite early challenges and traditional expectations about what a "real career" should look like, that curiosity never faltered.

He grew into a self-taught software engineer with over six years of professional experience, spanning healthcare systems, government platforms, tourism technology, and NGO programmes. Each sector taught a different lesson about how software actually meets users — from low-bandwidth clinics to offline field data collection.

Before founding Buildasoft, Julien held senior engineering roles at Andela and TrustStamp. At Andela, he worked inside one of Africa's most influential distributed engineering teams, learning how world-class remote engineering organizations are built. At TrustStamp, he shipped infrastructure that handles biometric identity at scale — the kind of system where mistakes are expensive.

Buildasoft Ltd grew out of a simple frustration: too many African institutions were running critical operations on brittle, half-finished, or imported software that nobody truly owned. Building a Kigali-based engineering team that could change that — a team that combined senior engineering with deep local context — felt like a problem worth committing to.

Today, Julien leads a small team dedicated to that mission. He still writes code most days, still reviews every architectural decision, and still personally answers the first email from every new prospective client.

When he's not building software, you'll find him writing about engineering on X or mentoring younger engineers who are working their way into the industry the same way he did.

How we work

Six principles we don't compromise on.

These shape every project. They're not aspirations — they're the way the team operates day to day.

Senior engineering only

Every line of code is written or reviewed by someone with real production experience. Junior engineers learn by pairing with seniors, not by shipping unsupervised.

Written before spoken

Decisions, scope, trade-offs — written down before the meeting. Easier to think clearly, easier to revisit later, easier to onboard new people.

Ship and operate

We don't disappear at launch. Monitoring, on-call coverage, patching, and quarterly reviews are part of how we deliver.

Honest about constraints

If your timeline is unrealistic, we'll say so. If we're not the right team for a project, we'll tell you that too, and recommend someone who is.

Security-first defaults

Secrets in dedicated stores, encrypted at rest, audit logs from day one. Not bolted on after a security incident.

Built for African contexts

Spotty connectivity, smaller devices, careful data budgets, mobile money, multilingual content. We've shipped against all of these.

Sectors we know

Industries we've shipped software for.

The team's working experience spans these sectors. We know their data, their regulatory edges, and the realities of running software in each context.

Healthcare

Clinical workflows, patient records, claims, provider directories — built for low-bandwidth clinical realities.

Government

Public-sector platforms, citizen services, internal tooling, and integrations with national systems.

Tourism

Booking platforms, operator tools, and visitor-facing apps for the tourism sector across the region.

NGOs & donors

Programme management, beneficiary tracking, reporting dashboards, and field data collection that works offline.

Cooperatives & SACCOs

Member registry, savings and loans, accounting, regulatory reporting, and member-facing mobile access.

Startups

From founding-team MVPs to series-A scale-ups, we partner with technical founders who want to ship faster without going off the rails.
